Date-stamped : 03 Dec96 - 22:12 2 December 1996 Pakistan team for one-day series today Samiul Hasan KARACHI, Dec. 1: The Pakistan cricket team for the three one-day internationals against New Zealand will be named from Lahore on Monday, Chairman of Selectors, Salim Altaf, said from the Punjab metropolis. The team will comprise 12 players out of whom the playing 11 will be finalised by the team management, added Altaf. "We don`t want to make changes in every match. Therefore, we will announce only 12 players leaving upto The Management to form the side for the Gujranwala, Sialkot and Karachi games." The first match of the series will be played on Dec. 4 and fol- lowed by the matches on Dec. 6 and 8. The 12-member party for the one-day series is unlikely to include speedster Waqar Younis. The pacer had pulled out from the Rawalpindi Test citing muscular pain in the lower left part of the rib cage. "Waqar (Younis) withdrew from the Test when the team physiotherapist, Dr Dan Keisal, informed him that he might aggravate his injury if he played the game. "I don`t know his present condition. He will be informing me tomorrow (Monday)," Altaf stated. According to sources in the Pakistan team, Waqar Younis is re- ported to have said that he was available for selection for the one-day series. "If he (Waqar Younis) doesn`t play, he will have to appear in a Patron`s Trophy match to prove his fitness before he is considered for selection for the Australian trip," stated the chief selector. "The PCB has made a policy decision that any player who withdraws because of injury has to play in the domestic competition to prove his fitness. Mushtaq and Inzamam played in the Quaid Trophy while Wasim Akram has promised me that he will play for PIA against ABL at Faisalabad between Dec. 4 and 7," the former Test bowler said. Waqar Younis was left out of the three one-day internationals series against Zimbabwe before he was recalled for the Sharjah tour where he captured six wickets in a match. The other change expected in the team will be the inclusion of holder of two world records in limited-overs internationals, Shahid Khan Afridi, for an out-of-form Zahoor Elahi. Afridi has been open- ing the innings with Saeed Anwar in the past six one-day interna- tionals. The likely 12 for the one-day series are: Saeed Anwar (captain), Shahid Khan Afridi, Inzamamul Haq, Ijaz Ahmad, Salim Malik, Mohammad Wasim, Moin Khan (wicketkeeper), Saqlain Mushtaq, Mush- taq Ahmad, Mohammad Zahid, Shahid Nazir and Mohammad Akram. However, if Waqar Younis is included in the team, Mohammad Akram will have to be left out. Source :: Dawn (http://xiber.com/dawn/) Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
