Help for Zimbabwe

29 November 1996

THE president of the Zimbabwe Cricket Union, Peter Chingoka, disclosed yesterday that England's tour could not have taken place without a major financial concession from the Test and County Cricket Board.

He said: ``The TCCB forfeited a substantial part of the tour appearance fee we would normally have to guarantee an incoming country. We really do appreciate that gesture, because it goes a long way to helping us develop our young cricketers. We would not have been able to stage a tour of this nature without that help from England.''

The TCCB are believed to have waived more than #100,000, and the ZCU are looking forward to significant profits from the tour, with around #450,000 already being generated by television revenue.

* Andrew Caddick is struggling to be fit for England's two one-day warm-up matches in Harare this weekend after spending a second day confined to his room with a virus.
