Date-stamped : 09 Mar97 - 22:26 8 March 1997 Mark Taylor Undergoes Back Scan Australian Captain Mark Taylor has undergone a scan after injur- ing his right lower back yesterday. Scheduled to lead the tour- ists in their 3 day game against Border, Taylor had to withdraw and Ian Healy leads the side the instead. The exact nature of the injury has to be ascertained, but the scan showed that there is no damage to the spine and it is defin- itely not a recurrence of the problem that necessitated surgery last August. Taylor hopes to play in Tuesday`s limited overs match against an Eastern Province Invitation XI in Zwide. On the field Australia continued to make light of South African opposition, dismissing Border for just 117 in 43.5 overs with Ja- son Gillespie taking 7/34. Border are not the strongest batting side in South Africa, but they, and especially veteran Peter Kirsten, playing in his final first-class match, must have expected to do better than this. Kirsten was dropped by Mark Waugh when he had just 5 runs to his name. He scored just 2 more before being caught by Matthew Elliot off of Paul Reiffel. Australia were 206/5 by stumps. The chief contributors to that score were Mark Waugh with 62, including 9 fours and a six, off of just 59 balls and Matthew Elliot with 41. Contributed by Bob.Dubery (dauphin@iafrica.com)
