S Africa call on Bacher and Gibbs

SOUTH AFRICA have discarded two of their most experienced batsmen - Andrew Hudson and Jonty Rhodes - for the second Test against Australia starting here on Friday.

After the demoralising defeat by an innings and 196 runs in Johannesburg, the selectors are replacing Rhodes, who has Test 30 caps, with Herschell Gibbs. Adam Bacher, in the line-up for the opening Test but then omitted, is likely to take the place of Hudson, capped 32 times.

Both Gibbs, who comes from the Cape, and Bacher, the nephew of Ali Bacher, the United Cricket Board's chief executive, scored centuries for their provinces last week and each has played three Tests for South Africa.

Off-spinner Pat Symcox is recalled along with all-rounder Brian McMillan in a 13-man party.

South Africa: *W J Cronje, G Kirsten, A M Bacher, J H Kallis, D J Cullinan, H H Gibbs, S M Pollock, B M McMillan, L Klusener, -D J Richardson, A A Donald, P L Symcox, P R Adams.
