Date-stamped : 29 Jan96 - 22:16 Monday 29, January 1996 NZ beat Zimbabwe by 74 runs in one-dayer AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Sunday - Opener Nathan Astle helped New Zealand to a 74-run one-day international victory over Zimbabwe on Sunday with his second century in 15 matches. Chasing 279 to win, Zimbabwe were all out for 204 in the 44th over. Zimbabwe were up with the required run rate until the 30th over when they lost Guy Whittall to a run-out with the score at 158. After that, Zimbabwe lost wickets at regular intervals, most to catches in the deep as the run rate faded out of reach. Shane Thomson, who took a wicket with his second ball, was mainly responsible for tying down Zimbabwe through the middle of their innings, finishing with three for 32 from his 10 overs. Larsen had three for 42 off eight and Morrison three for 34 off 6.5 overs. New Zealand were always in control from the moment they won the toss and opted to bat on the flat wicket. Astle accumulated runs at a steady and controlled rate. He hit 13 fours and a six before he was fourth out with the score on 232 in the 45th over. Roger Twose contributed 53 in 69 balls, putting on 135 for the third wicket with Astle. Zimbabwe did not help their cause by bowling 14 wides and three no-balls, two of which were scored off, to give New Zealand near- ly three extra overs.
