Sri Lanka who lost the first one-day game by 9 wickets at Gujranwala will be out to square the series with a better perfor- mance. Chaminda Vaas who missed the first game due to a hip inju- ry will be back in the side and his presence will no doubt strengthen the bowling which lacked penetration at the last game. He will replace Ravindra Pushpakumara who failed to impress at Gujranwala. Muthiah Muralitharan will also make his first appearance in the current limited over series. He will probably replace Ruwan Kal- page. However, both teams will name their final eleven only be- fore the morning of the match. Salim Elahi the Pakistan `new find` did a marvellous job as an opener in the first game and Pakistan did not feel the absence of Saeed Anwar who is still doubtful for the second one day game. Having lost the first match on Friday by nine wickets at Gujranwala, Sri Lanka came back strongly at the Iqbal Stadium to score a respectable 257 for seven and then restrict Pakistan to 208 for eight. The decisive 50 overs game will now be played at Rawalpindi to- morrow. Pakistan, having lost their opener Aamir Sohail in the second over, were well on their way chasing an asking rate of 5.16 per over, with Ramiz Raja and the century-maker of the first match, Salim Elahi taking on the challenge. The two put on 79 for the second wicket in 107 balls and looked set to ease Pakistan home, but Elahi was left stranded taking a second run and was run out for 47 in the 19th over. Ramiz was caught at deep midwicket off Kumara Dharmasina for 33 two overs later and Pakistan never recovered as wickets fell and the target slipped from their grasp. In the last 10 overs Pakistan were left to make 97 at nearly 10 an over with only four wickets remaining. They could manage only 47 as Sri Lanka romped home. Sri Lanka earlier, after being put in, were helped by a hard- hitting 51 by Jayasuriya, who hit four fours in the 72 deliveries he faced. With Roshan Mahanama, who made 30, he shared 75 runs for the first wicket in 18 overs. Jayasuriya, dropped when 10 by the Pakistan captain Ramiz, took full advantage of lapses in the field. Sri Lanka built on their solid start with a 109-run partnership for the third wicket between Asanka Gurusinha and Aravinda de Silva in only 106 balls. Gurusinha drove and cut powerfully to make 66 with five fours and a six. In the course of reaching his 18th fifty in one-day matches he also had the distinction of reaching the landmark of 3,000 runs playing his 112th one-day match. Find that out on Tuesday when Sri Lanka plays Pakistan in Sialkot, where the third and final one-day international match is due to be held. Sri Lanka stormed back to win the second one-day international against Pakistan by 49 runs to square the three-match series one each at the Iqbal Stadium, Faisalabad. Pakistan chasing a victory target of 258 runs in 50 overs were 208 for 8 wickets in their 50 overs. The Lankans who were sent in by Pakistan put up a sizeable score with an asking rate of 5.16 runs per over. After the Sri Lankan order batsmen obliged the bowlers supported by enthusiastic fielding gradually pushed Pakistan back on to the ropes. Pakistan began their dig at a terrific rate by scoring their first 50 runs in only 8.5 overs for the loss of Aamir Sohail`s wicket. A threatening second wicket stand between Saleem Elahi (47) who batted splendid and Ramiz Raja who added 79 runs off 107 balls really gave Pakistan the right platform. But when the stand was just about to pose problems for the Lankans Muralitheran at cover point sent in one of his accurate throws to send Elahi back after the third umpire declared him out. Elahi had 6 fours in his in- nings of 47 compiled off 60 balls. With the score at 92 for 2 Ramiz was out to a superb running catch by Jayasuriya who ran from mid wicket to deep mid on and thereafter Pakistan was struggling to come back into the game. Jayasuriya who won the man of the match award for his fine allround display accounted for two more vital wickets. He had the wicket off Inzamam caught by Gurusinha at deep mid on and bowled the sweeping Basit Ali around his legs. With the cream of the batting gone Pakistan were 160 for 6 in the 39th over. Muralitheran struck in his second spell when he had Moin caught by Kalpage substituting for Mahanama and Aravinda de Silva who earlier put on the breaks on the surging run rate by bowling first change bowled Aquib Javed and Aamir Hanif. With wickets falling at regular intervals Pakistan`s asking run rate gradually drifted away and finally they ran short by 49 runs.
