PROTEA CHALLENGE: Western Province v Transvaal
Played at Newlands, Cape Town on 10 October 1994

Transvaal staged a fine recovery to win the annual  Protea  Chal-
lenge  cricket  match against Western Province by five wickets at
Newlands yesterday.

Transvaal, chasing a target of 197, slumped to 39 for four before
24-year-old  Dean  Laing  and  21-year-old Anthony Pollock ripped
into the Province bowlers with a stand of 132 off 32 overs before
lefthander Pollock was dismissed for 48.

Laing dropped when he was four and 22, was unbeaten on 95 off 108
balls  (nine  fours and one six) when he hit the winning boundary
with 11 balls to spare.

WP`s Jacques Kallis, 19, played one of the most exciting exciting
innings  seen at Newlands for a long time. He made an unbeaten 61
off 72 balls.
