Date-stamped : 01 Nov94 - 10:25 Double Blow for SA - Rodney Hartman In a twin setback to South Africa`s floundering cricket hopes, Adrian Kuiper and Brett Schultz will not be fit to play this sea- son. Schultz, out of action with knee problems since last October, is likely to be fit again when England tour South Africa next year. Kuiper has an 80 percent chance of rejoining the action in 1995/96. Schultz is making slow but positive progress but Kuiper, who withdrew from the current tour of Pakistan after undergoing a second operation to his right shoulder, is currently in poor shape. In tests conducted on him this week, the once powerful allrounder was unable to throw a tennis ball underarm. The only way he can possibly hope to revive his cricket career is to have a third operation almost immediately. "It`s the only way," said cricket chief Ali Bacher yesterday, "otherwise he may as well pack it in." After discussions with a leading orthopaedic surgeon in Cape Town, Bacher said he had advised Kuiper to undergo surgery again. "He will have an 80 percent chance of full recovery. I`ve urged him to go for it. He`s an invaluable asset to our cricket and will be needed against England next year and in the 1996 World Cup." Bacher has also advised fast bowler Schultz not to rush back into action too soon following surgery to remove inflamed tendons from his knees. "He is making slow progress but that is what was fore- cast. My advice to him is to forget about this season. He`s only 24 and he should be raring to go in the five tests against Eng- land next year." Thanks :: The Star, Oct 28 1994 Contributed by Ros.Brodie (090ROZ@Witsvma.wits.ac.za)
