Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 06:30 Match Report: New Zealand vs NSW (2D - Newcastle, Oct 30) New Zealand bowler Danny Morrison emboldened Kiwi Test hopes when he ripped through New South Wales' Test batting quartet in a fluctuating tour match at Newcastle on Saturday. Morrison snared 4-13 in 35 balls as NSW crashed to 61 for four in their second innings at the close of the second day for an overall lead of 197 runs, with Michael Bevan not out on four and Greg Matthews on three. It was the right tonic for Martin Crowe's embattled Kiwis, who have lost their opening three tour outings and were dismissed cheaply for 163 in their first innings. The 27-year-old Morrison had Ashes opener Michael Slater caught down the legside in his third over, trapped Steve Waugh in front in his fifth, enticed a lazy cut-drive from Mark Waugh in his next and completed the swag when Blair Pocock held a sharp drive at silly leg from captain Mark Taylor in his eighth over. Morrison, who finished the day with 4-29 from nine overs, no doubt felt he had to restore some pride after his team-mates capitulated in two awful collapses. NSW declared at their overnight total of 299 for eight and the tourists were shaky at 19 for three when pace bowlers, Mike Whit- ney, Glen McGrath and seamer Brad McNamara struck in the opening hour. Ken Rutherford and rookie opener Blair Pocock added 91 runs in 127 minutes for the fourth wicket before the rot set in again. Rutherford reached 65 when he holed out to McGrath off Matthews, triggering a collapse of 7-53 as the innings lasted a little over four and a half hours. Pocock took 50 minutes to get off the mark and at 39 was set for a half century when he was run out by Steve Waugh. Simon Doull was given out first ball to a bat-pad decision off McNamara but was the only Kiwi batsman with a reasonable excuse. While New Zealand's bowlers have performed admirably in this match, victory sometime on Monday will only be had if the batsmen can follow suit. NSW received grim news earlier in the day when veteran fast bowler Mike Whitney broke down with a recurrence of a knee injury. Whitney will be out for at least a fortnight but a bad diagnosis on Monday could mean a serious operation and no cricket until the New Year. "It feels to me like cartilage and I say that being a veteran of plenty of knee operations," Whitney said afterwards. Contributed by vasa (vasa@sun.com)
