Date-stamped : 23 Dec93 - 22:52 IND RANJI 1993/4 : SAIL One-day Trophy : West Zone Gujarat v Maharashtra, Vallabh Vidyanagar, 5 Dec 93 (From The Times of India, 6 Dec 93, by Lionel Rodricks) Vallabh Vidyanagar, December 5. Surendra Bhave and Shantanu Sugvekar hit half-centuries as Maharashtra comfortably defeated Gujarat by five wickets in the SAIL Trophy one-day match at the Shastri maidan here today. In reply to Gujarat's 201 all out in 50 overs, Maharashtra scored 202 for 5 wickets in 48.1 overs, Bhave and Sugvekar contributing 69 and 55 runs respectively. Maharashtra were in no hurry to get to the target that looked easily attainable on the docile wicket, eventhough Surendra Bhave flicked the first ball of the innings to the fence. Hemant Kini- kar and Santosh Jedhe had departed for relatively poor scores, the former miscuing medium pacer, Mukesh Patel, to Tejas Varsani at mid-off after making 16 with two fours in a row off Varsani. Jedhe also smacked two boundaries before spinner Jayesh Pithawa- la, in his Ranji debut, trapped him leg before for 18. Bhave was the beneficiary of a poor piece of fielding by Dhansukh Patel. Bhave kept the scoreboard ticking with strokes all over the ground and when he departed after a 69-run knock with six fours caught by keeper Nilesh Modi off Pithawala, Maharastra were on the high road to victory.
