AUS: Domestic Season 1992/93 - Queensland Season Summary
|
Queensland
Queensland would be unhappy with their season after
leading the shield table for most of the season, they lost
top spot to New South Wales at the end, and with that the
shield final moved to Sydney and probably put the Shield out
of reach of the Queenslanders. They were also dissapointing
in the Mercantile Mutual cup after defeating Western
Australia, they dropped games to New South Wales and
Victoria, failing to qualify for the finals.
Allan Border topped Queenslands batting average
although he played only the four matches. It was Matthew
Hayden who was clearly Queenslands top batsman with 1150
runs at 52.27, he was consistent with 7 half centuries and
Queensland would have been in trouble with out him. Stuart
Law and Trevor Barsby were the only other batsman to average
over thirty with 823 runs and 908 runs respectively. Both
were a little bit inconsistent, but Stuart Law made more of
his runs in the latter stages of the season. Peter Goggin
who played all Queenslands matches did not have a good
season, for the major part he seemed to struggle, as his
aveerage of 26 indicates. Dirk Wellham was drafted into the
team to act as captain and it was not with the bat he
excelled only averaging 29.
The left arm finger spinner Steven Storey was initally
used as the number six but his batting failed to live up to
that spot, and he was dropped or played as the fourth
bowler. A former New South Welshman Darren Kingdon played 6
games but only made 169 runs, whilst wicket keeper Peter
Anderson played some good innings but not enough.
For the most part it was Queensland's bowling that got
it results, it was lead by Carl Rackemann who missed some
initial game through illness who finished with 33 wickets at
23.45, and Michael Kasprowicz with 51 wickets at 24.14.
Rackemann bowled with fire and hit the pitch hard, as he
proved that he was not beyond possible reselection for
Australia. Kasprowicz put behind him some dissapointments to
play his first full season and with 51 wickets he would have
been unlucky not to go to England. After appearing to have
given up cricket for good after a debilitating back injury
Dirk Tazelaar played 7 games and took 22 wickets in a fine
comeback by a bowler who looked in trouble after a
possibilty for international selection.a The fourth pace
bowler was the tall Greg Rowell who started with some fire
but fell away towards the end of the season bu still
finished with 28 wickets at 30.
Because of Paul Jackson's broken arm, Steven Storey
was the preferred spinner, however after 5 for 55 in the
first match against Western Australia, he failed to take
wickets and was eventually dropped. Paul Jackson took his
place and although at times he bowled well he did not take
many wickets. Craig McDermott played just four games for
Queensland and seemed a little out of sorts in those that he
did play.
