AUS: Domestic Season 1992/93 - NSW Season Summary

                  New South Wales
New South Wales had a satisfying season with victory
in the Sheffield Shield over Queensland and in the
Mercantile Mutual Cup against Victoria. Their victories were
heavily relient on the batting of few and the bowling. They
showed confidence on there ability and were willing to
accept loses in the search for an outright win.
Mark Waugh had the exceptional average of 108.60 for
New South Wales on the back of two big run a ball hundreds.
However he only played four games being on international
duty throughout the season. Instead Michael Slater in his
first full season provided the back bone of the batting.
With Steve Small out the team because of poor form Slater
settled into the opening spot and passed a thousand runs at
an average of 59.94. He was assisted by a late season
revival by Michael Bevan, who was also dropped early, who
made 875 runs at 51.47. Both Greg Matthews and Phil Emery
had consistent seasons without being extraordinary, scoring
around 500 runs with averages in the mid-thirties, both made
scores at important time. Bits and Pieces man Brad McNamara
also had a good season with the bat with 477 runs at 43.36,
again he consistent playing some important innings. Steve
Small and Trevor Bayliss had dreadfull seasons, both were
dropped during the season and were lucky that the Waugh
brothers were playing for Australia most of the season.
Steven Waugh and Mark Taylor also missed many matches with
Australia, Waugh only made 100 runs in his 3 matches whilst
Taylor did well, averaging 50 in his four matches.
Two promising batsman made their debuts during the
season, the first Adam Gilchrist did not set the world on
fire, but he displayed good qualities and will be around for
a long time yet. Gilchrist was unable to perform his primary
function as wicket keeper due to the incumbent Emery,
however his strength as a batsman was sufficient that he
played in that position. The second batting debutant was
Richard Chee Quee, he began well with 90 against the England
A team and looks a good prospect for New South Wales if not
Australia. Another younger Matthews Haywood would be
dissapointed with his two games, he was given a chance to
settle in the side but failed to perform and was passed by
Gilchrist and Chee Quee.
