Date-stamped : 02 Jul95 - 14:26 Tour match: SRI LANKA BOARD PRESIDENT'S XI v ENGLAND Played at Kandy, 9-11 February 1982. Although England`s first game in Sri Lanka was no more in danger of reaching a positive result than the last five tests in India, there were compensations for the home side in the promising form of Madugalle and Ratnayeke. Madugalle, a slender 22-year-old, showed engaging disrespect for reputation, confidently using the air to punish the spin of Emburey and Underwood, while the wide- shouldered Ratnayeke, a year younger than Madugalle, was full value for his five for 120. Without straining for pace he bowled a full fast-medium and maintained a good line. For England, Cook continued his staunch battle for Test recognition with a chance- less 104 in three and three-quarter hours, his second first-class hundred in succession. A newly laid pitch played fairly true, if slow, but the natural beauty of what was to be Sri Lanka`s second Test ground was marred by a bare and bumpy outfield. Source: Wisden 1983.
