Viswanath's partnership with Yashpal Sharma also lasted for two hours, adding 119 as the bowlers were completely dominated after tea. Dropped catches cost MCC dearly and only one front- line bowler, Hogg, took a wicket. Lever was wicketless in both innings, a contrast to his prolific county form. On the second morning MCC were in trouble against the new ball, Brearley being compelled to retire when he edged a bumper from Ghavri through the visor of his hel- met onto his nose! Parker and Tavare restored the innings, though they had to fight for survival before lunch and runs came slowly during the after- noon. The batsmen anjoyed more freedom eitehr side of tea, and Parker, who batted nearly four and a half hours, and Gatting treated the new ball with disdain. On the third day, India batted without much urgency, but Yashpal again confirmed his reputa- tion as a gifted stroke-maker. Set 264 in two hours thirty- five minutes, MCC shuffled their batting order but played without conviction. The opening batsmen vanished quickly; Gatting was run out by a riveting throw from Patel, and when Bedi took threee wickets in two overs with sharp turn, MCC were in jeopar- dy. Tavare and Emburey lasted seventeen overs, but Hogg, one of two injured men, had to limp in for the last two balls to save the match as India bustled through 21 overs in the last hour.
