Date-stamped : 02 Jul95 - 14:25 CC: SURREY v WARWICKSHIRE, The Oval, 18-21 July 1970 Warwickshire came from behind to snatch the major points by lev- elling the scores with a bye from the final ball. This was run to the wicket-keeper standing back to Jackman and earned Warwickshire five points. They were set 266 in three hours and a half, and an anchor innings by Jameson, 101 in three hours, and brilliant hitting and improvisation by Smith opened the way for the exciting climax. Tidy, the young leg-spinner, played a large part in the success. He took a brilliant one-handed catch on the first day to check Edwards when he seemed set for a century, and he routed Surrey in the second innings with his leg breaks accu- rately and purposefully bowled. Storey reached 100 in two hours ten minutes, an innings of splendid off-driving, for Surrey who, not for the first time, had the better of the game until the last day, when their opponents seized the spoils. Next day, Surrey were in another sizzling finish when Sussex beat them on the last ball of the Gillette Cup semi-final. Source: Wisden 1971. Contributed by J.R.F.Evans (en92jrfe@exeter.ac.uk)
