Date-stamped : 02 Jul95 - 14:30 SS: VICTORIA v SOUTH AUSTRALIA, Melbourne, 26-30 December 1913. In a truly remarkable game, following a total of 245, Victoria seemed to have little cause for anxiety, but, except Armstrong, who was suffering from malaria, the batsmen could do little or nothing against Crawford and Kirkwood. The two bowlers were un- changed, Kirkwood`s leg-breaks tossed high into the air, being very puzzling. South Australia led by 105 on first innings, but they lost seven second-innings wickets for 132. D.M.Steele and Kirkwood added 108 runs for the eighth wicket. Victoria required 352 to win and, at the close of the third day were 145 for three, Park being 65 not out and Armstrong 30 not out. Unfortunately for South Australia, Crawford was upset by the great heat and had to leave the field. He bowled again the next morning, but to little effect. Park and Armstrong hit the score to 239 before lunch, and in the end Victoria gained a brilliant victory by five wickets. Park and Armstrong put on 153 runs. Both played finely, but Armstrong might have been caught and bowled twice from hard chances when on 97 and 108. Source: Wisden 1915. Contributed by J.R.F.Evans (en92jrfe@exeter.ac.uk)
