CC: WARWICKSHIRE v GLOUCESTERSHIRE, Edgbaston, 27-29 June 1895.
Result: Warwickshire won by an innings and 24 runs.
Umpires: L.Hall (Yorks) and A.F.Smith (Yorks).
Being seen to great advantage at all points of the game,
Warwickshire gained a highly creditable victory over
Gloucestershire by an innings and 24 runs. Defeating a strong
team such as Grace`s Gloucestershire was a significant achieve-
ment in only their second season in the county championship.
Having the good fortune to win the toss, and so getting first in-
nings on a fast and true wicket, they made splendid use of their
opportunity scoring 407. Lilley played an admirable game for 135,
and Hill, Glover and Walter Quaife all did exceedingly well. The
successful batting was followed up by some excellent bowling,
fielding and wicketkeeping, and Warwickshire`s victory was seldom
in doubt. On the second evening Gloucestershire were handicapped
by having to bat in a bad light, but, on the whole, they were
outplayed. Rice fared well in each innings, and W.G.Grace at his
first innings scored 43 in an hour. It will be noticed that he
was twice caught at the wicket. By his fine batting and superb
wicketkeeping Lilley had a large share in the success of his
county.
