A one-innings match is played, with the winner gaining 12 points. Position determined by points gained. If equal, then decided on most wins. Each team plays 22 matches. Counties were required to bowl 19.00 overs per hour overall. Counties failing to do so incurred fines, of which the counties paid half and the players half. Each county could decide on the contribution to be made by each player to any fine. In deciding fines, the season was divided into two halves of 11 matches and fines graded per half season: under 19.00 overs per hour £600, under 18.50 overs per hours £800, under 18.00 overs per hour £1000. Glamorgan v Gloucestershire at Cardiff, Derbyshire v Nottinghamshire at Derby, Essex v Gloucestershire at Chelmsford, Middlesex v Sussex at Lord's, Northamptonshire v Leicestershire at Northampton, Surrey v Hampshire at The Oval, Gloucestershire v Sussex at Bristol, all abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The competition was sponsored by Schweppes Prize money: Winner: £12000 2nd: £6000 3rd: £3000 4th: £1500£150 to the winner of each match. £5 for each bonus point scored.
