The two first innings limited to a total of 200 overs. The side batting first limited to 100 overs. Any overs up to 100 not used by the side batting first could be added to the overs of the side batting second. Position determined by points gained. If equal, then decided on most wins. Each team plays 22 matches. Sussex v Gloucestershire at Hove, Derbyshire v Nottinghamshire at Derby, Gloucestershire v Somerset at Bristol, Middlesex v Sussex at Lord's, Northamptonshire v Glamorgan at Northampton, Surrey v Essex at The Oval, Warwickshire v Worcestershire at Edgbaston, Yorkshire v Nottinghamshire at Sheffield, Leicestershire v Hampshire at Leicester, Middlesex v Nottinghamshire at Lord's, all abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The competition was sponsored by Schweppes Prize money: Winner: £8000 2nd: £3500 3rd: £1750£120 to the winner of each match. £5 for each bonus point scored.
