The two first innings limited to a total of 200 overs. The side batting first limited to 100 overs. Any overs up to 100 not used by the side batting first could be added to the overs of the side batting second. Position determined by points gained. If equal, then decided on most wins. Each team plays 22 matches. Gloucestershire v Northamptonshire at Gloucester, Somerset v Derbyshire at Taunton, Northamptonshire v Glamorgan at Northampton, Essex v Kent at Colchester, Gloucestershire v Yorkshire at Bristol, Lancashire v Surrey at Old Trafford, all abandoned without a ball being bowled.
The competition was sponsored by Schweppes Prize money: Winner: £4000 2nd: £2500 3rd: £1250£100 to the winner of each match. £1 for each bonus point scored.
