SOUTH AFRICA PREVAIL - EVENTUALLY

Terblanche and Davies resumed after lunch needing just 34 to complete the South African win. The total was duly reached in the 27th over but not without tremors.

Oudolf induced Terblanche to offer a chance that was not accepted by Milburn behind the stumps when the score was 63. Then Salomons, having taken over from de Fouw at the city end, went one better, getting Davies to drag her off spin onto the stumps. South Africa 65 for three in the 16th over.

Oudolf then had the reward she deserved, offering the new batsman, Anina Burger, a juicy full toss. Burger took full advantage only to see Reynolds take a scorching catch at square leg.

The Dutch had not finished. Similar ball from Oudolf in the next over and this time it was de Fouw who took the catch and Denise Reid's very short stay was over. South Africa 67 for five in the 19th over.

However, at the other end Terblanche was playing with composure, defending when necessary and taking advantage of anything loose. Tight bowling and fielding ensured the South Africans had to work for the victory.

And the Netherlands were not finished. Oudolf's replacement, Irish Jharap, brought Strydom dancing down the pitch and Milburn was left with an easy stumping. Strydom gone for 11 with score 90 for six.

Kim Price hit the winning runs while Terblanche ended with a very patient and in the end necessary 37

Oudolf produced the best figures, conceding just 31 off her 10 overs and capturing three wickets.

It was a win for South Africa by four wickets but not quite as easy at it might have been.

The Netherlands, 92; South Africa 93 for six.

SOUTH AFRICA IN CONTROL

Cindy Eksteen and Daleen Terblanche began the chase for the modest 93 with the Netherlands defence initially in the hands of Elise Reynolds from the southern end and Sandra Kottman.

Kottman had immediate success, the South African top order again demonstrating some fragility as Eksteen was caught in front with the score on one in the second over.

Sunette Viljoen joined Terblanche earlier than she would have liked. However, she immediately set about Reynolds, taking 10 off the medium pacer's second over and forcing an early change, Cheraldine Oudolf coming on at the southern end with just four overs bowled.

The change made little difference to Viljoen, racing through to 23 as the first five overs conceded 27 runs.

However, Oudolf and Kottman pulled the scoring rate back a little. The introduction of Caroline de Fouw's off breaks coincided with the arrival of the 50 in the 10th over. But at the other end Oudolf's tighter line brought reward, Viljoen trying to hit her way out of the shackles and succeeding in sending it only as far as van der Gun at a deep cover. Viljoen had contributed an aggressive 32 to the South African total of 51 for two.

South Africa went to lunch at the end of 12 overs needing just 34 to win with eight wickets in hand.

NETHERLANDS CRUMBLE

Lewis and Ndzundzu gained just reward for their efforts in the 31st and 32nd overs, Ndzundzu removing Salomons for three with a smart caught and bowled with the score at 79 and with no addition Lewis got Milburn's edge and Daleen Terblanche completed the dismissal behind the stumps. The wicket keeper contributed 11.

The Netherlands slump continued, Ndzundzu clean bowling the new batsman, Carly Verheul, for four with the score at 83 for six.

Cheraldine Oudolf joined van der Gun to get the innings back on track. However, their partnership was short-lived. Van der Gun on nine tried to loft Lewis and the substitute Aluis Kuylaars coming in from mid wicket took the catch. The Netherlands 92 for seven.

Ndzundzu ended her spell with a fine two for 16 off 10. She was replaced at the pavilion end by Helen Davies whose right arm medium pace immediately had sensational success. It turned into a long over, Davies bowling the new batsman, Sandra Kottman, for no score, drinks being taken and then Davies removed Helmein Reynolds, getting through her defences. The Netherlands 92 for nine.

It was left to Lewis to wrap up the innings, Oudolf going caught behind and the innings closing at 92.

Davies' one over gained two wickets for no runs but the performance of the innings was Lewis' four wickets for 20 runs off 8.4 overs.

The Netherlands slump was comprehensive, going from 68 for three in the 26th over to 92 all out in the 38th.

South Africa came out immediately needing 93 to win.

SOUTH AFRICA GAINING CONTROL

It was surprising, with Price bowling so tightly, that she should take herself off in the 17th over and bring in the right-arm medium pacer Nolubabalo Ndzundzu for her first spell of the tournament.

However, Ndzundzu maintained the tight line but it was Eksteen who made the breakthrough, getting just reward with the wicket of te Beest, caught in front trying to pull through square leg. Te Beest gone for 13 with the score at 52 for two.

Rowan Milburn, the Netherlands wicket keeper and daughter of the former New Zealand and Otago keeper Barry Milburn, joined Kosta but the initiative had clearly shifted back to the South Africans, just 12 runs coming from the second 10 overs.

Levona Lewis replaced Eksteen at the southern end after the opening bowler completed her 10 overs with a respectable one for 26. The left arm medium pacer continued the tight line and length.

They were helped by the clear discomfort of Koster, the leg injury that kept her out of the previous match clearly restricting her ability to convert ones into twos. It did not stop her aggressive approach, however, a cover drive through mid off keeping the score moving.

The Netherlands reached the innings half way mark at 68. However, 68 for two was soon 68 for three as Koster's brave effort came to end on 36. The injury constraints left her trying to chip Lewis over the top and getting it only as far as the covers where Helen Davies moved well to her right to take the catch.

Caroline Salomons joined Milburn and immediately urgency was injected into the running between the wickets. However, the combination of Lewis and Ndzundzu made the Netherlands pair work hard for their runs. The third 10 overs produced 21, the Netherlands ending the 30th over at 78 for three.

NETHERLANDS START WELL

The Netherlands openers, Maartje Koster and Caroline de Fouw, were gifted an early bonus when the South African medium pacer Yolande van der Merwe lost her line to the tune of three wides in her first over and allowed Koster to loft her to the long on boundary in her second. At the other end, Cindy Eksteen's right arm medium pace initially was miserly but Koster showed early aggression with scant respect for either opening bowler.

The Netherlands pair collected 21 off the first five overs courtesy of some luck, Kosta being dropped twice - behind the stumps and in the slips. However, their luck ran out in the sixth over as de Fouw atte, on three, attempted a second run that was not there failed to make her ground. The Netherlands 22 for one.

The captain Pauline te Beest joined Kosta and immediately picked up a four fine on the leg side off the more economic Eksteen.

The expensive van der Merwe was replaced by Kim Price in the nineth over. While the Netherlands continued to maintain the pressure, gathering 44 from the first 10 overs, South Africa managed to tighten the line, Eksteen and Price producing successive maidens.

The 50 came up in the 14th over, still a respectable rate but Price in particular was making life difficult. The Netherlands went to the end of the 15th over at 51 for one.
