Batting lets Bangladesh down

Though Bangladesh had plenty of vocal supporters in a near-capacity crowd at Chelmsford yesterday, and many more watching from a multi-storey car park overlooking the ground, they could not prevent an emphatic New Zealand win.

After Bangladesh had been put in, their batsmen, veering between the nervous and the over-ambitious, could make little of well-directed New Zealand bowling and they declined to 51 for seven before the tail produced some useful hitting.

However, Bangladesh's bowlers, particularly their opening pair of Hasibul Hussain, fast right-arm, and Manjurul Islam, left-arm over, caused New Zealand a number of problems, but with their target so modest, their victory was never in any doubt.

Bangladesh got off to a nightmare start, New Zealand's sharpish left-armer Geoff Allott dipping two balls in to openers Shahriar and Mehrab Hossain to gain leg-before decisions, leaving Bangladesh seven for two in the third over.

Skipper Aminul Islam and Akram Khan looked like righting the ship but both perished to poor shots.

New Zealand slipped to 33 for two by the 10th over but Matt Horne eventually got going against Enamul Hoque's slow left-arm to set up the victory which Roger Twose ushered in.
