New Zealand's hopes of seizing an upset win had been built on a wonderful all-round performance by Chris Harris, who hammered 130, bowled his 10 overs of medium pace quite tightly and fielded superbly. The New Zealanders' innings was transformed from 44 for three by a fourth wicket partnership of 168 in 27 overs between captain Lee Germon and Harris. The capacity crowd of 42,000 revelled in their controlled, aggressive batting, with Germon making 89 off 97 deliveries, hit- ting one six and nine fours. Harris eclipsed his previous one-day international best of 68 not out, facing 124 balls for his 130 which contained four sixes and 12 fours.
