Cricket has to make the most of White Ferns' impact
Lynn McConnell - 26 December 2000

Now it is up to New Zealand Cricket to market the success of the CLEAR White Ferns for the betterment of the women's game in New Zealand.

That was the sentiment expressed by several players after their emotional parade in front of nearly 8000 cricket fans in Wellington who poured a wave of euphoria over the CricInfo Women's World Cup winning team during the lunch break of the New Zealand-Zimbabwe men's test at the Basin Reserve.

The players, who won their title on Saturday in Christchurch, were flown in from all around the country for one of the biggest exposures for women's cricket in New Zealand's sporting history.

Players were introduced to the crowd, interviews were held with captain Emily Drumm and retiring players Catherine Campbell and Debbie Hockley.

The players, carrying their trophies and their winner's medals, then walked around the outside of the ground to a standing ovation. They stopped and signed autographs, had their photos taken and shook hands.

The players, used to playing their international matches in front of minuscule crowds, said the occasion was one of the highlights of their careers and a very special feeling.
