Farbrace would choose the same side again Lynn McConnell - 14 December 2000
England coach Paul Farbrace, contemplating the wreckage of his side's failed campaign at the CricInfo Women's World Cup at Lincoln University today, said he would have no problem choosing the same 14 players again. "The batting today has summed up our batting in the whole competition," he said of the side's 93-run loss. "But I would pick the same 14 without any shadow of doubt," The failure to do any better than fifth was not due to any lack of effort or trying. Pressure of responsibility did get to some players but it was a team effort and he couldn't point the finger at anyone in the side. A player like Charlotte Edwards had worked hard in the lead-up to the tournament but it hadn't worked for her. "She is heartbroken she hasn't performed and I hope that at the next World Cup she gets the chance to come back and show what she can do. "Even top players in men's cricket can have bad patches," Farbrace said. "Barbara Daniels didn't perform as well as we would like her to have done and I hope she gets the opportunity to show what she can do. "But it is the whole side which has to say 'we haven't done it as a team'," he said. England had to make the most of building against quality sides over the next two summers. Australia will tour England for two tests and three ODIs next year and New Zealand is likely to tour the following year. "We have got to play against the best teams to get our standards up," he said. New Zealand's win today extended its run of ODI wins over England to 13, since the loss in the World Cup final of 1993. The appointment of a full-time coach to work with both the senior team and development sides in England, in February-March, would be one step. Farbrace's time with the team is now completed. "I said before that this would be my last trip. I will now concentrate on my youth coaching at home. "There is a nucleus for a very good side here. Players like Arran Thompson, Dawn Holden, Laura Harper and Nicky Shaw all have another two or three World Cups ahead of them while Jane Cassar and Clare Connor have another two. "At the next World cup England has got to set a goal of not developing a team but saying that it wants to get into the final, and that is there to compete," he said. © CricInfo
