Tough job ahead for South Africans Lynn McConnell - 12 December 2000
Picking themselves up after their mauling by New Zealand yesterday will be the task for South Africa when they play Australia tomorrow at the CricInfo Women's World Cup. New Zealand was such a convincing winner that it is a huge task expecting the South Africans to be able to get back into competitive mode for the all-conquering Australians. There is talent enough in the South African side, but the experience required to really test the Australians is lacking. It will be a valuable learning experience for the developing South Africans, who despite their lack of top-level exposure have talented players capable of giving the Australians a run for their money in the unlikely prospect of Australia taking the game lightly. Australian coach John Harmer has said all through the tournament that there are still things to work on for his side. He wasn't happy with the fielding on the last outing against England so it can be guaranteed there will be plenty of attention in that area of the game. One area in the fielding that will be of interest is the level of respect the Australians pay to teenage South African fielder Sunette Viljoen who is the clear front runner for the title of fielder of the tournament. Using Jonty Rhodes as a model she has prowled the cover-point region with cat-like grace and has pounced several times with deadly effect. © CricInfo
