Second Indian player's bowling action to be investigated
Lynn McConnell - 11 December 2000

Indian off-spinner Purnima Rau has been added to the group of players whose bowling actions have been regarded as suspect by umpires at the CricInfo Women's World Cup in Christchurch.

It was surprising that Rau wasn't named in the original list of three last week.

The report by the umpires of the New Zealand-India game on Saturday, Australian Test umpire Peter Parker and Canterbury first-class umpire Peter Williams was made to tournament organiser Tim Murdoch, the administration manager of New Zealand Cricket.

The umpires were of the opinion that the spin bowler may contravene Law 24.2 and 24.3.

The report stated: "The umpires are of the opinion that the bowling arm was bent but found it difficult to establish from our positions on the field whether there was any straightening prior to the ball being released."

The umpires have bought the matter to the attention of the World Cup Technical Committee with a recommendation that the action be more closely scrutinised and remedial coaching undertaken if necessary.

Murdoch, said the Indian team management had been advised of the umpires' report.

"As in the first instance, we have advised the team management and will write to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) requesting analysis of the action and remedial coaching support as required," Murdoch said.

Purnima Rau will not be prevented from bowling during the CricInfo World Cup.
