Win tomorrow would seal New Zealand's semi-final place Lynn McConnell - 10 December 2000
New Zealand's path to a semi-final berth is the goal tomorrow at the CricInfo Women's World Cup when it comes up against a South African side it is not too sure about. With Australia becoming the first team to qualify today when reaching the magical 10 points mark, New Zealand would like the win tomorrow to also notch 10 points. CLEAR White Ferns coach Mike Shrimpton is looking for a better start from his batsmen when the side bats because he is not happy with the way the side has constructed its innings to date. "We don't know this team particularly well," he said of South Africa. The fact that they can upset New Zealand's momentum on the run towards the semi-finals is concern enough for him. Especially after the intensity of the effort in beating India in an action-packed game on Saturday. "After the intensity of that match I am mindful of us going into the game a little flat. "We have to be switched on and be motivated to get our batting plan into operation. "We have been batting a little slowly in the early overs and have not been getting off to the starts we wanted. We need to do a responsible job," he said. South Africa, after its win over England earlier in the tournament, has the capacity to upset and is playing for its own semi-final place. With New Zealand, Australia and Ireland to play yet, South Africa has a tough finish to the tournament but it can still qualify for the semi-finals. A win over New Zealand and then one over Ireland would assure it of a place. The game is to be played on Lincoln Green, a smaller ground than the BIL Oval and is shaping as another important cog in New Zealand's aspirations. © CricInfo
