Half century provides relief for Hockley Lynn McConnell - 9 December 2000
New Zealand batsman Debbie Hockley was relieved to finally get runs on the board when scoring 53 in the side's 74-run win over India in the CricInfo Women's World Cup game at BIL Oval today. In four previous tournament innings she had scored only 38 runs and was becoming concerned that her powers of scoring which have seen her become the most successful batsman in women's One-Day International cricket, had deserted her. When registering her 50 with a trademark cover drive, she also became the first woman to score 4000 runs in ODIs. "It was a big relief, a massive relief personally. "I had felt a bit out of touch and as happens you try to relax but get more tense. I didn't think about it last night and batting on a good track I just wanted to be careful. "I didn't look at the scoreboard for a while until I got going. Anna [O'Leary] and I haven't batted together a lot but we were quite disciplined with our shots and worked in scoring in pairs of overs." Hockely was pleased for O'Leary who was out for 89 in the last over, following her 91 against Sri Lanka earlier in the week. "She was really stuffed at the end, she had done a lot of running. On windy days like this you are not hitting a lot of boundaries," she said. What was pleasing for Hockley was that it was nice to have a plan, as a side, and be able to execute it. The personal milestone had not been on her mind. She said she thought about it before the tournament and felt that if she couldn't score the number of runs required in seven or eight innings then she wouldn't have had a very good tournament. "But we had a comprehensive win today. "India contributed to it in the end. I don't understand the Indian attitude to their chase, and I don't care. "We had a couple of bowlers who did well at critical times and they [India] just gave up. "We just have to absolutely make sure we win our next two games," she said. © CricInfo
