Life doesn't get any easier for England
Lynn McConnell - 9 December 2000

England faces its toughest foe yet in the CricInfo Women's World Cup at Lincoln Green tomorrow when meeting defending champion Australia.

The Australians have been in such commanding form so far that it is going to take a supreme performance from an England side that has been under-achieving throughout the tournament if an upset is to occur.

Not helping the English one bit will be the fact the Australians have had three days off since their thrashing of India and they have been making the most of the chance for a good break from the cricket.

That must spell danger for the English who, while buoyed by a comprehensive win over Ireland on Thursday, still have a long way to go to play at anything like their potential.

A lack of consistent top-order run scoring is likely to be exposed by whichever attack options the Australians field for the game.

England could hope to use its bowling resources to pin down the Australian batting, and that would be its most reasonable method of an upset.

But so few teams have won from batting second to chase anything like a reasonable target that even that may not be an option for the English. They of all teams know that.

As for the Australians, they will feel great confidence that most of their top order are now firing as well as they can while their bowling attack has been too strong for anyone else in the tournament to date.

It is shaping as another hard day in the field for England.
