Schedule & Results Summary

Date Match Venue Result
26-27.05.06 Hong Kong v. Singapore Kinrara Oval

Hong Kong 111 in 58.4 overs (Miten Rajesh Khatri 21, Sagar Chandra 21; Alagappan Senthi 2-21, Styavraj Rao 2-21) and 191-8 wickets in 59 overs (Ashish Gadhyia 68, Zuaid Khan 33, Aneesh Varma 27, Vivek Manglani 20; Timothy Rushil Singham 3-34, Sachin Mylavarapu 2-38) drew with Singapore 158-5 in 60 overs (Timothy Rushil Singham 81*, Korak Ganguly 35; Vivek Manglani 2-20, Niaz Ali 2-38). Man of the Match: Timothy Singham (Singapore)

Report: Singapore won the toss and put HK into bat at the impressive Kinrara Oval, the home of the Malaysia Cricket Academy.  HK openers Aneesh Varma and Vivek Manglani made a cautious start and, lacking confidence on turf wickets, managed only 24 in 14 overs when the first wicket fell. Wickets fell regularly thereafter until Miten Khatri with a patient 21 off 88 balls and Sagar Chandra with 21 added some respectability to a meagre first innings total of 111. During Singapore's innings HK opted for the pace option with Zuiad Khan and Niaz Ali shouldering a heavy workload of 35 overs between them and Shivam Hemnani bowling 7 overs. Singapore Captain Timothy Singham produced an unbeaten knock of 81 to lead his team to a score of 158 for 5 in the allotted 60 overs and the first innings lead.  Vivek Manglani and Niaz Ali both claimed two wickets for HK. In HK's second innings both openers made a bolder start and forged a partnership of 52 in 14.4 overs.  Captain Ashish Gadhia compiled a notable 68 and Zuiad Khan added 33 off 24 balls but the tail failed to build on a positive start and HK finished the second day on 191 for 8 off 59 overs. Singapore took the lion's share of the points on offer from this match.

29-30.05.06 Hong Kong v. Nepal Royal Selangor Club

Nepal 152-7 in 60 overs (Prith Banskota 51, Saga Pun 25; Niaz Ali 3-27) and 68-3 in 31 overs drew with Hong Kong 87-9 decl. in 47 overs. Man of the Match: Prithu Banskota (Nepal)

Report: In a rain affected match HK met Nepal at the Royal Selangor Club. The first day was marred by rain and the sound of lightning warning sirens. Defending champions Nepal were asked to bat after HK won the toss and  Zuiad Khan and Niaz Ali again led the attack bowling 32 overs between them as Nepal scored 152 for 7 in their 60 overs. While Zuiad Khan remained wicketless Niaz Ali picked up 3 wickets for 27 off his 14 overs. A captain's knock of 51 by Nepalese skipper Prithu Banskota was the backbone of the Nepalese batting.  The second day was curtailed by a waterlogged outfield and play commenced after lunch. HK managed a meagre total of 87 for 9 declared in 47 overs and conceded the first innings lead and points in the face of some simple but effective field placing by Nepal.  Zuiad Khan was the main contributor with some patient batting scoring 38 in 87 balls. Nepal batted a second time as HK went in search of bonus points, opting for the spin bowling of Vivek Manglani and Vikey, but managed to take only 3 wickets as Nepal cruised safely to a total of 68.  This result left HK firmly on the bottom of the table in Pool A with only 8 points.

01-02.06.06 Hong Kong v. Malaysia Royal Selangor Club

Hong Kong 117 for 53 overs (Zuaid Khan 36, Ashish Gadhyia 30; Nik Azril Arifin 4-13, Ahmad Zahid 3-18) and 50 in 35.5 overs (Nik Azril Arifin 4-15) lost to Malaysia 201-9 from 58.3 overs (Zubair Asyraf 36, Muhd Haziq 36; Zuaid Khan 3-42, mark Chapman 3-40) by an innings and 34 runs. Man of the Match: Azril Arifin (Malaysia)

Report: Next up for HK were the hosts Malaysia, an experienced squad who reportedly trained intensively over many months for this tournament.  Most of the Malaysian team have been playing age group cricket together for three years or more and they had recently toured Sri Lanka playing practice matches.  At least half of Malaysia's squad attend a school geared to cricket located in Penang complete with Sri Lankan professional coach. The benefits of such a structured approach to youth cricket showed as Malaysia eventually topped Pool A with 55 points in stark contrast to HK's total of 12. Despite this imbalance HK who won the toss and elected to bat started brightly after the early loss of both openers and resolute batting from Miten Khatri, recovering from a leg injury (16 in 88 balls), Zuiad Khan (36) and a brisk 30 from captain Ashish Gadhia saw HK through to a respectable 100 for 4 before the tail folded and HK were all out for 117.  Malaysia's openers started positively against the HK new ball bowlers and an opening stand of 59 was ended only when Mark Chapman began a spell of 14 overs in which he took 3 wickets for 40 and the left arm spinner should have enjoyed richer returns. Malaysia elected to bat through their overs and, despite Zuiad Khan mopping up the tail early on the second day managed 201 all out in reply. HK's second innings was marked by a lack of resolve from a number of batsmen and HK were dismissed for 50 to hand Malaysia an outright win.
