CHRIS CAIRNS ROUTS BANGLADESH ON LAST MORNING

Chris Cairns rocked any hope Bangladesh had of making New Zealand bat again in the first Test in Hamilton.

He took five wickets in 38 balls as New Zealand wrapped up the first National Bank Test for a win by an innings and 52 runs. It is New Zealand's 48th Test victory.

In the space of 18 balls he picked up his first three wickets, including the overnight batsman Mohammed Al-Sahariar, without addition to his score of 53.

Then he got an edge from Bangladesh captain Khaled Mashud's bat which was taken by New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming at first slip.

Next man in, Khaled Mahmud, who had caused New Zealand some problems with a late rally in the first innings as the follow on mark neared, then edged a ball to Mathew Sinclair at second slip where the catch was held.

Cairns was sitting on a hat-trick for the second time in the match but Mohammed Sharif was able to keep the ball out and survive the over.

However, the damage was well and truly done and Bangladesh were 98/7, still 57 runs from making New Zealand bat again.

The five-wicket bag was the twelth of Cairns' career, and it was the second seven-wicket bag of his career, the first also occurred at Hamilton, two years and two days ago against the West Indies.

With runs hard to come by Shane Bond benefited and bowled Sanwar Hossain for 12 after a 60-ball innings.

Cairns took his sixth wicket when Mashrafi bin-Murtaza tried to pull a ball which went straight up in the air for anyone of three players to take the catch. Lou Vincent settled the issue as others stood by watching.

Then the last batsman Mohammed Sharif edged a ball to Fleming at slip again to complete the loss for Bangladesh.
