WEST INDIES BOWLED OUT FOR 199 DESPITE LARA'S 92

A superb 92 from Brian Lara was the impressive icing on a rather stale and uninspiring cake for the West Indies as they were dismissed for 199, four balls short of their full 50 overs, after being put into bat by South Africa in the fifth one-day international at the Kensington Oval on Wednesday.

Coming in at number three, Lara watched the wickets tumble at the other end while never truly unleashing the shackles in the teeth of some fine, accurate South African bowling and some magnificent fielding from Herschelle Gibbs in particular. There were flashes of brilliance from Lara, but it was an innings of accumulation rather than assault.

He was eventually last out, bowled by Jacques Kallis as he heaved across the line in search of some quick runs at the death.

Not for the first time this summer, the West Indies openers failed to provide anything remotely approaching a platform for the likes of Lara to build on. A new combination it may have been, but the result was distinctly familiar.

Kallis dismissed both with just 24 on the board, first Chris Gayle (6) edging to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher as he drove loosely with his feet rooted to the spot and then new partner Daren Ganga (15) trying to pull a fast bouncer and splicing the ball back to the bowler. Ganga's departure was a relief for Pollock - the captain put down a stinging chance at second slip when Ganga was on 12.

Lara and captain Carl Hooper were again left with with leaks to plug, and although both looked untroubled, a piece of brilliance from Makhaya Ntini brough wicket number three.

After seeing Hooper (21) drive him over extra-cover for four and then edge one to the third man ropes, Ntini produced a spectacular fast yorker which uprooted Hooper's middle stump.

Marlon Samuels (1) flashed flat-footed at Allan Donald to give Boucher a second catch, bringing the experienced Shivnarine Chanderpaul in to partner Lara. Both batsmen worked the ball around comfortably enough, before Gibbs produced the first of two moments of magic.

A split second's hesitation from the batsman was all Gibbs needed to pounce from midwicket and catch Chanderpaul (24) well short of his ground with a direct hit as he threw off-balance to the non-striker's end.

Lara and Ridley Jacobs then shared a stand of 61 for the sixth wicket, Jacobs smashing Ntini over midwicket for six before Gibbs intervened three balls later. Jacobs probably thought his cover drive was on its way to the boundary, before Gibbs dived low to his right to pluck an astonishing catch inches from the grass.

Dillon (0) skied Donald to Boucher, Dinanath Ramnarine (2) offered catching practice to Jonty Rhodes off the same bowler and the delivery before he bowled Lara, Kallis had Kerry Jeremy caught at fine leg by Ntini.

WEST INDIES SENT IN TO BAT IN FIFTH ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL

South African captain Shaun Pollock won the toss and sent the West Indies in to bat in the fifth one-day international at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Wednesday.

The West Indies, who trail 3-1 in the seven-match series, made three changes to the side that lost the fourth ODI in Grenada on Sunday. Daren Ganga and Dinanath Ramnarine were given their first game of the series with Mervyn Dillon also recalled to the side. Left out of the team were Ricardo Powell, Neil McGarrell and Nixon McLean.

In the South African team, Jacques Kallis has been brought back in place of Lance Klusener who has a groin strain.
