CHANDERPAUL AND HOOPER LIFT WEST INDIES TO 220-8 IN SECOND ODI

A superb 60 from just 54 balls by Shivnarine Chanderpaul and 48 from captain Carl Hooper helped the West Indies reach 220-8 from their 50 overs after being put into bat in the second of seven one-day internationals at the Antigua Recreation Ground on Wednesday.

Some beautifully controlled bowling in the middle overs from Jacques Kallis and Allan Donald, in particular, played a crucial role in keeping the final West Indies total to 220

Chanderpaul delved into his box of shots for several reserved strictly for the one-day game as he struck two fours and three sixes and shared in a partnership worth 86 for the fourth wicket with Hooper.

His demise was a major anti-climax, comfortably run out by Boeta Dippenaar's throw from backward point as he was sent back by Hooper. Mark Boucher broke the stumps with his gloves but still had plenty of time to remove a stump and complete the dismissal.

Hooper was equally impressive as he struck four fours and a six but fell as he tried to work Shaun Pollock over the infield and was caught at cover by Justin Ontong.

Kallis took two wickets in succesive deliveries in the final over of the innings to go with the three run outs which came when he was bowling, one of them a piece of suicide from Marlon Samuels (3) as he dropped the ball straight to Jonty Rhodes and set off in search of a non-existant single. Kallis clean bowled Neil McGarrel (3) with a magnificnt in-swinging yorker, then saw Nixon McLean drive straight to cover.

Earlier, openers Leon Garrick and Chris Gayle took the total to 51-0 after 15 overs, with Gayle very much the senior partner. While Garrick struggled with his timing and scored largely in singles, Gayle took the attack to the South Africans and to Roger Telemachus in particular.

Gayle found the boundary four times off the opening bowler, once memorably stepping down the track to smash Telemachus straight over his head for four.

The momentum swung back South Africa's way on the introduction of Donald and Kallis, who combined for a superb spell of one-day bowling. They conceded just 25 runs from 12 overs, and although neither took a wicket, their ability to build pressure finally told.

First Garrick was run out as Kallis followed through to collect and return the ball to the non-striker's end where the batsman was well short of his ground. Garrick made 16 from 61 balls and hit just one four.

Two balls after reaching his fifty Gayle followed, superbly caught by Pollock as he turned and sprinted from mid-off to give Lance Klusener his first wicket. Gayle's 50 came off 72 balls and included seven boundaries.

Brian Lara moved quietly to 13 off 38 balls before he fell in almost identical circumstances to the same combination, Pollock taking a more routine chance on this occasion.

WEST INDIES ASKED TO BAT IN ANTIGUA ODI

South African captain Shaun Pollock won the toss and asked the West Indies to bat in the second one-day international at the Antigua Recreation Ground on Wednesday.

The South Africans made one change from the team that lost the first ODI in Jamaica on Saturday with Boeta Dippenaar coming in for his first international outing of the tour in place of Neil McKenzie who has a hamstring strain.

The West Indies, meanwhile, brought Shivnarine Chanderpaul in for the injured Ricardo Powell while Kerry Jeremy was replaced by Nixon McLean.
