SOUTH AFRICA TAKE SECOND TEST AND SERIES

Jacques Kallis and Daryll Cullinan contrived to get themselves out, but South Africa duly knocked off the 86 required to win the second Castle Lager/MTN Test match against New Zealand by seven wickets at St George’s Park on Monday.

The match ended 81 minutes into the fifth day when Gary Kirsten drove Brooke Walker for four to give the South Africans an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Fittingly, man of the match Neil McKenzie was with Kirsten when the winning runs were scored.

The home side started the day on 29 for one, still needing 57 to win and with Kallis in commanding mood, the target looked likely to be reached sooner rather than later. He hit five sumptuous boundaries, including a savage pull and a textbook drive off Chris Martin, but after reaching 23 he top-edged a hook off Martin and was caught at fine leg by Shayne O’Connor.

Cullinan, too, seemed to want to finish the match quickly, but after pulling Martin for four and lifting Walker straight down the ground for another boundary, he pushed forward to Kerry Walmsley and was bowled between bat and pad for 11.

Kirsten, meanwhile, nudged and pushed his way his way into the 40s before the winning boundary left him unbeaten on 47. McKenzie, who opened his account with a straight six off Walker and then played out a maiden from Walmsley with the scores tied, ended on 7.
