The exasperated grumbles of members, clearly audible while New Zealand were gorging themselves on sub-standard bowling from a second-string attack, subsided to a slightly mollified mutter when Adrian Rollins's unbeaten 111 redeemed a modicum of pride for a Derbyshire side who have now lost eight games on the trot in four brands of cricket.

The omission of Dominic Cork, Phil DeFreitas and Andrew Harris from an attack already lacking the injured Kevin Dean was a source of disgruntlement among the paying public even before New Zealand's dismissive assault.

Matthew Horne and Matthew Bell launched New Zealand with a stand of 132 in 21 overs and Craig McMillan added a swift 86 off 69 balls, including four sixes and five fours.

Derbyshire's bowling was treated with something close to contempt as Nathan Astle hit 34 off 13 balls, including three sixes, and the last five overs of the innings yielded 91 runs.

Only off-spinner Simon Lacey emerged comparatively unscathed and the scene seemed set for humiliation when Matt Cassar's off-stump was flattened in the second over of Derbyshire's purely theoretical attempt to score at well over seven runs an over to win.

In the event they made a reasonable fist of it, with Rollins, leading the side in Cork's absence, lofting Shayne O'Connor for six to get off the mark and clearing the boundary four more times, as well as hitting six fours in the 159 balls he faced.
