The Electronic Telegraph Glamorgan v Warwickshire, NatWest Trophy, Round 04
Peter Deeley - 07 July 1999

James carries the day

Glamorgan (254-5) bt Warwicks (238) by 16 runs

Steve James's third century in this competition spearheaded Glamorgan's emphatic victory over a Warwickshire side who again performed below their potential.

James batted through the home side's innings for his 118, scored off 151 balls, including eight boundaries and a five, without giving a serious chance. He was ably backed up by Adrian Dale in a third-wicket partnership of 111 in 20 overs. With Dale's dismissal, Glamorgan captain Matthew Maynard attacked the bowling to such effect that he reached 39 off 27 balls.

Warwickshire were handicapped by further ankle trouble for Allan Donald, who limped off the field after his opening two-over spell. This was only his second game since the World Cup and though he came back at little over half pace to finish his 10 overs and took two wickets, he is still troubled by a problem that has dogged him over recent seasons.

That could not entirely explain the Birmingham side's third defeat in a week, all under acting captain Nick Knight. Disgruntled Edgbaston members could be asking some awkward questions of the county's executive at the club forum tonight.

Robert Croft posed problems to which Warwickshire's batsmen had few answers after Darren Thomas had broken an opening partnership of 77 between Anurag Singh and Knight.

Croft took three wickets in the space of 21 balls, including a fine reaction catch by Maynard at slip, the other two trapped leg before sweeping. He finished with the day's best figures, three for 38.

David Hemp, the former Glamorgan batsman playing with a runner for most of his innings, was the only Warwickshire player to offer any real resistance. He scored 55 off 78 balls before being bowled by Steve Watkin swinging across the line.
