Scotland v Surrey, NatWest Trophy Keith Graham - 23 June 1999 Saqlain's spin sinks Scotland Surrey (148-3) bt Scotland (147) by 7 wkts Surrey were always in control in their tie against Scotland, overhauling the home team's modest total of 147 all out in just 37.3 overs. Scotland surprisingly chose to bat in overcast conditions and immediately suffered a setback when their captain, Douglas Lockhart, was run out from the third ball of the first over, sent back when going for a risky single. Australian Corey Richards, together with Bryn Lockie, took the Scots past fifty before Richards was caught at slip, driving at Mark Butcher. The introduction of Saqlain Mushtaq to the attack further applied the brakes. The off-spinner took four of the next five wickets to fall at a cost of only 17 runs - a spell that earned him the man of the match award. Colin Smith, who made 23 on his debut, was the only home batsman to play with real aggression. Adam Hollioake wrapped things up by taking the final two wickets in his solitary over but Surrey also got off to a poor start when Alistair Brown was lbw to James Brinkley without scoring in the first over. Alec Stewart consolidated, however, and with Ben Hollioake took Surrey to 90 in 23 overs before being well caught at slip off Craig Wright for 64, taken off 78 balls and including 10 boundaries. Hollioake soon followed but Graham Thorpe's assured, unbeaten 39 saw Surrey home.
