The Electronic Telegraph Scotland v Dorset
Keith Graham - 19 May 1999

Richards plugs gap

Scotland (245-7 in 50 overs) bt Dorset (169 in 47 overs) by 76 runs

Scotland, despite fielding a weakened side because of World Cup duties, still coasted past Dorset in their second round tie in Glasgow yesterday.

The Scots were able to field West of Scotland's Australian professional, Corey Richards, and he put them on course for victory with a splendid innings of 70. He was quickly in action when Bryn Lockie fell to a catch behind from the first ball he received in Steve Forshaw's opening over. Richards and Rennie Keith then added 62 for the second wicket and although the Scots were on top, their progress was somewhat pedestrian.

It was only when Craig Wright and Colin Smith came together for the sixth wicket that Scotland really seized the initiative. They added 57 in double quick time with both of them clearing the boundary in a thunderous assault on the visiting bowlers, Wright going to 39 off just 27 balls. Smith remained until the end having thrashed an unbeaten 48 in 31 balls.

Dorset soon lost two wickets for 17, both to Wright but David Miller (41) and Julian Cassel (24) added 57 before Cassell was bowled by Richards. A tight spell by off-spinner Gregor Maiden which yielded two wickets turned the game Scotland's way and Dorset eventually succumbed to 169 all out, Wright earning figures of three for 20 and sealing the Man of the Match award.
