The Electronic Telegraph Scotland v Nottinghamshire Cricket Board, NatWest Trophy 1st Round, 1999
Keith Graham - 4 May 1999

Scotland in command

Scotland (215-1) bt Nottinghamshire Board XI (212) by 9 wkts.

Scotland were in cruise control yesterday as they thrashed a Nottinghamshire County Board XI by a nine-wicket margin to go through to a second round tie against Dorset at Hamilton Crescent in two weeks' time.

A century from man of the match Steve Crawley was the icing on the cake for a team who were superior in every phase and department.

Only briefly did the Notts torch flicker when, after they had elected to bat, Andrew Jackman (52) and Steve Brogan (61) took advantage of some wayward early bowling by the Scots. Jackman, driving powerfully on the front foot in particular, punished Scott Gourlay who came on second change at the Railway End and bowled a succession of half volleys.

The former Carlton professional had just reached a vigorous half-century by pulling Kevin Thomson over the ropes at square leg when he went to drive off-spinner Gregor Maiden, only to hole out at extra cover. Thereafter, the remaining batsmen were unable to get on top of an increasingly confident Scottish attack, led by Craig Wright whose 10 overs yielded the excellent figures of four for 30.

Maiden also kept things tight, conceding only 28 runs from his quota and Martin Hays, too, impressed with an economic 10-over spell of one for 32. Overseas amateur Corey Richards picked up two cheap wickets towards the end as the visitors reached a disappointing total of 212 all out.

Crawley and Bryn Lockie quickly established dominance over a moderate Notts attack. Together they added 141 for the first wicket before Lockie was surprisingly given out run out from a direct hit. His 55 came off just 85 balls and included six boundaries.

Crawley continued to dominate a flagging Notts attack and went to his century with the help of a six and 13 fours as Scotland ran out easy winners with nearly eight overs to spare.
