The Electronic Telegraph Glamorgan v Nottinghamshire, National League 2nd Division, Round 18
Martin Searby - 22 August 1999

Kallis has that touch of class

Glamorgan (247-5) bt Nottinghamshire (147) by 100 runs.

Jacques kallis, the South African all-rounder, scored a rapid 79 to take his National League average to 106.33 and Glamorgan nearer to promotion to the top division.

Kallis and Steve James put on 142 in 25 overs together with Kallis lashing a six over long off and adding seven boundaries in a sparkling innings which lasted just 68 balls before he was caught at long off.

James, dropping anchor, plagued the Nottinghamshire bowlers yet again, after his unbeaten 259 in the championship match, with a high-class 91 made from 141 deliveries.

On a slow pitch, a target of 248 was always going to be pretty demanding and it looked even stiffer when Steve Watkin took a Nottinghamshire wicket in each of his first two overs. But deposed England wicketkeeper Chris Read and Usman Afzaal, playing his first Sunday League game, altered the equation with a rapid stand of 71 in 15 overs. But as the ball softened, Adrian Dale, the man of the match, made a major contribution with a lovely spell of straight bowling to return three for 19 from his nine overs.

Out-of-favour England spinner Robert Croft continued his renaissance with some fine bowling to finish with the best figures of the match, a splendid four for 31, as the last seven Nottinghamshire batsmen fell for only 55 runs.
