Trescothick fails to save Somerset

An enthralling 110, off 97 balls, by Marcus Trescothick and his stand of 132 in 20 overs with Keith Parsons revived Somerset from a desperate position but could not render them safe from the loss of their unbeaten record.

Trescothick came in the ninth over with four wickets lost for only 18 runs. When the burly left-hander was brought to book in the 39th, having struck 11 fours and three sixes with exquisite timing, Somerset were 196. But Somerset could eke out no more than 22 runs from the remaining overs, and that despite a spirited 24 by Graham Rose.

The decline in Somerset's fortunes was brought about by the off-spin of Keith Dutch who, beginning with the dismissal of Parsons, took five wickets for 35 runs.

The carnage before the Trescothick-Parsons association was formed was the doing of Angus Fraser, who bowled his allotment for only 17 runs, and Jamie Hewitt.

Not content with the havoc he had caused with the ball, Dutch hurried Middlesex along towards their objective, reached with 35 balls to spare, with an audacious 57 off 45 balls, including seven fours and three sixes. He and Mike Roseberry, unbeaten with 91, scored 102 of the final 118 runs in 17 overs.
