The Electronic Telegraph Glamorgan v Sussex, National League Second Division, Round 10
Neville Scott - 04 July 1999

Rashid takes five for Sussex

Sussex (201-8) bt Glamorgan (121) by 88 runs (D/L method)

The omens were bad from the first proper delivery of Glamorgan's reply when Steve James, unaware ``no-ball'' was earlier called, offered a defensive bat to his subsequent free hit.

On a slow, turning pitch, with Umer Rashid claiming first-ever five-wicket bag, a target of 210 in 41 overs was never remotely on.

Unbeaten in all nine one-day games this year, Sussex move top of Division Two but Glamorgan, without a win of any kind for five weeks, look like a side falling apart.

They learnt too late there was little profit bowling fast, with Chris Adams and Michael Di Venuto hammering 84 from the 12 overs to the end of the 15th as seamers were repeatedly driven on the up.

Di Venuto's wonderful revival after a meagre first month continued with 65 from 58 balls while Adams, now the League's second top scorer, went on to 80 not out. It should have been more. Sussex, losing the plot, surrendered five wickets for 20 in the final five overs, Adams taking just 22 of the last 66 balls.
