Brown blasts Derbyshire

Surrey (238-9) bt Derbyshire (174) by 64 runs

Alistair Brown has given way to Lancashire's Andy Flintoff as the England selectors preferred 'mad axeman', but in domestic one-day cricket it remains hard to imagine a more regular match-winner than the aggressive Surrey blaster.

Brown's 105 off 91 balls, with three sixes and 10 fours, pulled Surrey round after a poor start, and a fifth-wicket stand of 114 in 18 overs with Adam Hollioake propelled them to a total Derbyshire never remotely challenged.

Surrey, who won the toss, were wobbling at 62 for four, with left-arm seamer Kevin Dean doing all the damage, but Brown hoisted the left-arm-spin of Glen Roberts for two sixes in quick succession to shift the balance, and Surrey never relinquished control.

Michael Slater perished in the first over of Derbyshire's reply, steering straight to slip, and they were beyond hope at 64 for five.

Paul Aldred and Kevin Dean put on 40 for the last wicket but Surrey still won with 3.2 overs to spare. England Test hero Alex Tudor later faced a throng of autograph hunters. No matter that this time he had made only 18.
