Northamptonshire v Surrey, National League Second Division, Round 07 Martin Searby - 13 June 1999 Thorpe unable to save Surrey Northamptonshire (235-8) bt Surrey (230) by 5 runs Even with eight internationals in their line-up, six of them at the top of the order, Surrey could not overcome a determined team effort and despite powerful contributions from Graham Thorpe, 70 from 90 balls, and Ben Hollioake, 45 from 53, top-class out-cricket paid the bigger dividend. On a pitch offering little encouragement to stroke-makers, the home side, who chose to bat first, kept the momentum going more evenly and Surrey were undone when Alec Stewart, in his first innings since the World Cup, had his off stump flattened by Devon Malcolm. David Sales, with 54, top scored for Northamptonshire and 71 runs came in the last 10 overs.
