Somerset v Surrey Nelson Clare - 23 May 1999 Somerset maintained their impressive start to the season with a comprehensive, six-wicket win over Surrey at Taunton. After restricting the visitors to 184 for nine from their 45 overs, Somerset cruised to victory with more than six overs to spare. Peter Bowler (70) and Rob Turner (63) made batting look easy and they put on a third-wicket partnership of 115 in 20 overs. Bowler reached his half-century off 76 balls with nine fours and appears a rejuvenated player this season, having surrendered the responsibilities of captaincy. Earlier, Surrey had been reduced to three for three after losing the toss and they never recovered from their disastrous start. They needed solid contributions from Alistair Brown (32), Jason Ratcliffe (38) and Gary Butcher (34) to post their modest score. Ben Hollioake's dismissal for a duck summed up Surrey's day: playing back to Steffan Jones, he made solid enough contact with the ball but touched the base of his leg stump with a heel and dislodged a bail. Somerset have so far proved invincible at home in the championship and National League and, even without captain Jamie Cox, Paul Jarvis and Graham Rose because of injury, they were always on top.
