Bob Woolmer was left in no doubt about the size of the task he will face when he rejoins Warwickshire next year as Leicestershire inflicted another humiliating defeat at Edgbaston last night.

Woolmer probably did not expect to be coaching a Second Division side when he agreed to return to Edgbaston six weeks ago. But that is the prospect Warwickshire now face after losing eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions.

The former South Africa coach might have hoped his presence last night would lift morale but there was no discernible improvement as Leicestershire dominated every aspect of the game.

Warwickshire's bowlers, with the exception of Ed Giddins, appeared incapable of bowling to a set field and their batsmen fared even worse as they limped to 138 for eight to leave them anchored in the relegation zone.

Out of Leicestershire's total of 250 for eight more than half the runs came in boundaries, so inaccurate was the bowling.

Darren Stevens, the 23-year-old opener from Hinckley, needed no second invitation to indulge himself and he raced to a swashbuckling 82, his maiden limited-overs half-century, from just 67 balls with 66 of his runs coming in boundaries.

Warwickshire could have few complaints about chasing a target of 251 under lights on a murky evening as Neil Smith opted to bat last and the forecasted rain did not arrive until the game was lost as Michael Kasprowicz took three quick wickets on his way to a competition best of four for 30.
