Gloucestershire suffer

Leics (214) beat Gloucs (176) by 38 runs

Having restricted Leicestershire to 214, Gloucestershire seemed to have a chance of recording their fourth win in five National League games, but they suffered early damage from the visitors' new ball attack and never mounted a serious challenge.

James Ormond, moving the ball away, dismissed Bobby Dawson, caught behind, and Matt Windows and Ian Harvey, both taken at slip, and when Kim Barnett chased one from Alan Mullally Gloucestershire were struggling at 60 for four.

Jack Russell's departure without scoring was a further blow. Mark Alleyne and Jeremy Snape then put on 58 together to restore some respectability, but as the asking rate continued to rise Darren Maddy picked up three wickets against increasingly desperate hitting.

Earlier, Leicestershire, who won the toss, were given an excellent start by Iain Sutcliffe and the promising Darren Stevens. At 80 for one after 15 overs, Leicestershire were heading for an imposing score but, after Stevens had been well caught at mid-off from another fierce drive, one or two injudicious strokes were played as they declined to 153 for five.

Paul Nixon's 33 helped to put them back on course, only for Harvey, making clever use of a well-disguised slow ball, to take the last four wickets for three runs in 11 balls to post a competition best five for 41.
