Kent wide of the mark

Worcs (182-5) bt Kent (102) by 67 runs (D/L method)

Very little went right for Kent yesterday. After conceding far too many runs on a seaming wicket of occasional variable bounce they were then required to score a demanding 170 runs in 26 overs under the Duckworth/Lewis method. They did not come close.

Their best hope lay with a significant contribution from either Trevor Ward or Andrew Symonds, or preferably both. But Ward perished in the fifth over after a quickfire 20, and then Symonds departed in the next one, clipping Stuart Lampitt to short fine leg. The rest followed tamely, and Matthew Rawnsley will never pick up an easier haul of wickets. It was poor fare for a patient crowd, who had been forced to suffer a lengthy delay in each of the rain interruptions before being advised of Kent's revised target.

Worcestershire's total owed much to a pragmatic half-century from Vikram Solanki, who was content to push the ball around the slow outfield, and a Kent attack who gave away 19 wides, seven from Dean Headley. Otherwise Headley was the pick of the home bowlers, and he curtailed Paul Pollard's innings by inducing one to lift alarmingly off a length. Happily, an X-ray confirmed that there was no break of Pollard's left index finger.
