Worcestershire v Yorkshire Mike Beddow - 3 May 1999 Yorkshire (213-7) bt Worcs (212-5) by 3 wkts
Yorkshire celebrateOne hundred years ago today Worcestershire met Yorkshire in the first County Championship fixture to be played at New Road. Yorkshire won, as they did yesterday with 87 from David Byas in the modern idiom of the National League, but what would the Victorians have made of Royals v Phoenix? Yorkshire marked the centenary by presenting a crystal bowl to Worcestershire's Huddersfield-born president, Ray Booth, and Bradford-born David Leatherdale raised local morale with a league-best 70 not out from 82 balls. Gavin Haynes escorted Leatherdale in a partnership of 133 in 24 overs until mis-clubbing to mid-on - a third wicket for Chris Silverwood after his dismissals of Phil Weston and Vikram Solanki. Worcestershire's recovery from a slow start was in contrast to the haste of Yorkshire's openers, Byas and Greg Blewett, in reaching 72 in 78 balls. When Byas departedAlamgir Sheriyar took two wickets in an over but Yorkshire won with four balls to spare.
